Sally Banes is terrific, I agree, especially on Judson stuff. She just hasn’t been as visible (to me at least) as Jowitt and Siegel. And you’re right about Giddins. Alas, it’s even worse: The Voice has also had first-rate theater and visual arts criticism over the years. I like both Ratliff and Chinen a lot. They are smart and busy both.

With Jowitt, I can’t get it out of my head that she’s more important than the Voice. By herself. She should be firing them.

Excellent summation of Jowitt’s prowess as a cultural observer and dance writer. Marcia also rocks, but let’s not forget about Sally Banes(Terpsichore in Sneakers and the equally as essential Greenwich Village 1963).

Sad thing is that Voice still hasn’t realized the hole that’s been left by not just Christgau, but Gary Giddins exit. They have an occasional Francis (Mr. Terry Gross) Davis piece–but their position as a major organ of jazz criticism has gone flaccid. Nate Chinen and Ben Ratliff are now passing as old hands at the NY Times and they’re both under 40.

Otis Ferguson, Edwin Denby. . .where are you?
