<description>My grandmother was a big fan of Archy &#38; Mehitabel. Since her parents had read aloud to each other, she wanted to duplicated this tradition in her household, so in late 1920s Fairbanks, Alaska, newly married, she chose A&#38;H as the first book to read to her husband. It went over like the proverbial lead balloon: my grandfather, who was a bit of a prude, thoroughly disapproved of that tramp Mehitabel. Marquis is the source of one of my favorite quotes: "Publishing a book of poetry in America is like dropping a rose petal off the rim of the Grand Canyon and listening for the echo."</description>
