		<description>Laura, First of all, thanks for visiting Art Scatter! It could have been a time issue: To sift through the papers, really look at the work, talk to people who knew the Morrises, spend some time researching the Northwest School and the artists at Spokane Art Center, etc., and then try to enter that time and the ideas that were swirling around would have taken many months at least.  I would have LOVED to read what came of it, though.</description>

My impression after reading the essay was that  Roberts was at a loss for what to say or think about those paintings, so she drew upon an art history ploy.  Carl was his own person right from the start and those early paintings were very personal and yet reflected the time.  It was a lost opportunity in some ways, but
it was great to see the work all together.</description>
